Art for a Cause: Help us grow an innovative local food platform

In March, Sustainable America took an exciting step toward strengthening local food production by acquiring SharedEarth.com. An innovative online farming platform, Shared Earth is the largest community garden in the world, matching those who wish to garden or farm with those who have available land to offer. This simple tool has great potential to empower gardeners, boost local food production and strengthen communities.

We have big plans for the site — over the next year, we’ll be working on ways to expand Shared Earth as a platform for innovation in urban gardening, local food networks, and other sustainable food-related services.

In order to get there, we’re going to need help. This month, with the help of Adam Dell, Shared Earth’s founder and our board member, we’re holding an art auction to support Sustainable America and our implementation of the Shared Earth website. There are currently 13 pieces up for auction from cutting-edge contemporary artists, and more will be added before bidding closes. All proceeds from the auction go to the support of the organization.

Artists include Shantell Martin, who was featured in The New York Times for drawing on the walls of her apartment, and Dustin Yellin, an artist and founder of Pioneer Works Center for Arts and Innovation, a Brooklyn space that brings together artists and scientists. You’ll also find works from exciting artists like Ron English, Domingo Zapata, Matthew Satz, Shark Toof and more.

The pieces up for bid are now live on paddle8.com. Online bids will be accepted until Tuesday, May 20. The highest bid for each piece from the online bidding becomes the mark-to-beat on auction day at the live auction taking place on May 20 in New York City.

Below is a slideshow of some of the works up for auction. We hope you’re consider making a bid. Or, you can also help by becoming involved with SharedEarth.com. If you’re looking for space to garden, or you have land you’d like to offer up, log on, create a listing, and grow some local food!
